Monastery of San Michele – Lonate Pozzolo
Once one of the largest female monastic complexes in Northern Milan, founded in 1290 according to the Augustinian rule, it was consecrated in 1476 and dedicated to Saint Michael in 1557.
Built in Lombard Renaissance style around a cloister, it housed all the essential spaces for monastic life: a refectory, kitchen, cells, church, and a 40-meter-deep well. Suppressed in 1784, it fell into neglect until the Municipality acquired it in 1983 and began a conservative restoration.
Today it houses the “Gian Domenico Oltrona Visconti” municipal library, a multipurpose hall, and exhibition spaces.
A permanent space dedicated to local history was recently inaugurated, and projects to enhance the entire building continue, thanks to new funding.
A living place, where past and present meet, culture and community.
Villa Porro – Lonate Pozzolo
An elegant 16th-century patrician residence, located along the ancient Via Roma; it was built by the Della Croce family and became the country residence of the Porro nobles in the 18th century.
Arranged in a horseshoe shape, the villa combines the main body with a Lombard yellow façade with a rustic red brick wing. A 19th-century turret and wrought-iron coat of arms complete the entrance, while the interior boasts historic decorations, stone fireplaces, Venetian mosaic floors, Lombard terracotta, and floral frescoes.
The romantic “Garden of Surprises,” with allegorical statues, a well, a fountain, columns, and a glass-enclosed lemon house, continues the aesthetic experience.
Restored between 1994 and 1997, the villa now hosts cultural events, meetings, and ceremonies in a refined and welcoming historical setting.

Church of Sant'Ambrogio – Lonate Pozzolo
The parish church of Lonate Pozzolo, dedicated to Sant'Ambrogio and built between 1499 and 1513 based on a design by local architect Antonio da Lonate (a pupil of Bramante), underwent a transformation in 1560 with the enlargement of the rectangular hall and the polygonal apse.
The imposing and detached bell tower was erected in 1635: 48 metres high and characterised by a brick structure with double proportions (square exterior, circular interior), it houses eight bells and is framed by the Lonato coat of arms of the three moons.
The neo-Renaissance gabled façade is surrounded by a richly decorated arched cornice with graffito, with a main portal featuring a pronaos and tympanum, and featuring a rose window and an oculus with the effigy of the saint.
Inside, a single barrel-vaulted nave, finished with 19th-century side chapels and Renaissance frescoes in the apse (with St. Ambrose as the central figure), as well as paintings depicting saints and sacred scenes, give the church a notable artistic and spiritual value.
